Question:

Any tips for buying and storing fruit? I bought an un-ripe cantaloupe that I kept on my table until an end had softened and it smelled ripe. Cutting it open exposed a blackened end, which I removed yet it tainted the flavor of what remained. Ideas?

— Diane Kirschner

Answer:

Yes. So, you know, I I don't like waste at all, but if I see a, a problem in an apple or a melon or something and you go to cut it off, oftentimes it has permeated the whole thing. Um, this is what the farmer said to me. He said, cantaloupe is picked unripe and will ripen on your counter in your home. Watermelon is ripe when it, when it's picked. He said you really want to keep watching it. When one end is just slightly, when the cantaloupe looks slightly lighter in color, it's time to put it in the refrigerator. And you know, I find cantaloupe is a musk melon and I find the, um, scent of them, shall we say, can be sometimes pretty overpowering. So Diane, you want it, you really have to just, you have to watch it. You, it sounds to me like you went a little. You let your cantaloupe get a bit too soft.
